A Friday Profundity – There’s Just as Much Inner Space as There Is Outer Space
It was 1975. I was on the road with my rock and roll band. We were gigging all over Florida. Ft. Lauderdale has wonderful beaches. One night after the last set was over at the club, some of us decided to go for a late night/early morning swim. We went to one of those beaches where, althou
gh technically illegal, swimwear (or any wear) was optional. So lots of skinny dipping was goin’ on.
Cool. Plus we had a hot chick lead singer in the band and it was always a pleasure to see her in the buff. Cheap thrills.
So I had a swim, spread out a beach towel and laid on my back, enjoying the balmy wind off the ocean and allowing my mind to drift off into the stratosphere. The Man in the Moon was in full blast moonbeams mood.
The myriad stars were amazing to behold. Dazzling. Staggering to try and wrap your head around the vastness of outer space, hmm?
Close to me on the beach was a maybe 30-ish looking guy with a kid with him. A boy. His boy, I could tell as they talked. A marvelous little fellow, and even though I guessed him to be no more than six or seven, he was asking his father some pretty heavy stuff. Things like, “How far are the stars from here,” and, “So where do they all come from – who, I mean what made them all, Papa?”
Dad said, “Son, those stars are so far away, if you could travel as fast as light it would take your whole life to reach some of them, and others you’d never even get to in your lifetime. And who made them? Where do they come from?” He leaned over to look at the boy. ”Close your eyes.”
“Huh? Close my eyes – why, Papa?”
“Look deep. There’s just as much space inside as there is outside. And it’s all you, me, everyone and everything - and it’s all one.”

What a great way to answer that question to a child! And thanks for giving it to us to think about, Marvin.

So true!
Abd you rebel you!
One wise father there Marvin. Most enjoyable to read.
Yvonne,
Ah yes, skinny dipping, love it! LOL – hey smart Dad that kid had. Wonder what he grew up to be?
Profound answer indeed! What a cool experience to share, Old silly!
Wow – now that’s deep! Great Dad for that kid to have!
Love love love this. That was one great dad. Thanks for sharing this, Marvin. Do you miss your rock ‘n roll days?
Karen
Karen thanks – and yes, the old R&R days were quite an incredible experience and I do miss them. Even though fraught with perilous lifestyle, if I had it to do over, I’d do it again.
Love the post. Great way to explain. Thanks for sharing. Listening for songs from your rock and roll days …
I’ve heard Marvin sing!
He has a great voice! Very gritty and bluesy. I could totally imagine him singing rocknroll. He has great control of his “instrument” (in the words of of Paula Abdul), but truly he has a wonderful gift!
I have always admired singers, and now he’s on that list too!
*smile*
Flattery gets your everywhere with the Old Silly, Quirks!
What a great answer. You were in a band? This explains SO MUCH to me!!
Elspeth
Explains what – the dizzyheaded old silly behavior – result of too many drugs in my youth? lol.
Pretty smart dad!
Thanks for mentioning the hot chick so that I might leave your blog with a nice visual in my head!
You know me – always one to share, Alex.
I love it except on days when I have to realize that the beeeotch that just cut me off driving is part of me.
Sigh.
I thought maybe the boy was going to ask why you were naked…
No – I had on my thong – what do you take me for, Reffie?
Old R&R player, eh Old Silly? Cool! Hey pretty solid dad the kid had – thanks for sharing the experience. Especially the hot chick lead singer, lol.
Sounds like a magical night. And considerable wisdom in the Papa’s answer.
Simple mind that I have, I thought Dad asked his son to close his eyes to shield him from the skinnydippers.
Profundity is all well and good. But cheap thrills live forever.
Best, Galen.
Best Regards, Galen.

That is such a profound answer to all those questions. Thank you for sharing it with us. The next time my son asks me his questions, I know the answer to the ones I am not in a mood to attempt answering.
