A Saturday Parable – Walking on Water

Posted by theoldsilly on November 28, 2009

Today’s parable is on the Law of Attraction – we receive what we believe, and our reality is a manifestation of our beliefs. The short story is written by Sri Ramakrishna

~~~~~
A farmer’s daughter duty was to carry fresh milk to customers in various villages. One of the customers was a priest. To reach his house, the milkmaid had to cross a good-sized stream. People crossed it by a sort of ferry raft, for a small fee.
One day the priest, who performed worship daily with the offering to God of fresh milk, finding it arrived very late, scolded the poor woman.
 ”What can I do?” she said, “I start out early from my house, but I have to wait a long time for the boatman to come.”
Then the priest said (pretending to be serious), “What? People have even walked across the ocean by repeating the name of God, and you can’t cross this little river?”
This milkmaid took him very seriously. From then on she brought the priest’s milk punctually every morning. He became curious about it and asked her how it was that she was never late anymore.
“I cross the river repeating the name of the Lord,” she replied, “just as you told me to do, without waiting for the ferry.”
The priest didn’t believe her, and asked, “Can you show me this, how you cross the river on foot?” So they went together to the water and the milkmaid began to walk over it. Looking back, the woman saw that the priest had started to follow her and was floundering in the water.
“Sir!” she cried, “You are uttering the name of God, yet all the while you are holding up your clothes from getting wet. That is not trusting in God!”
    Interesting and it shows the lack of devotion of the priest, or that the girl knows where the rocks are.
    Now THAT’s faith! LOL, had to laugh at Unwriter’s comment. ;)
    Excellent parable and message, Marv. Great thoughts to start the day with.
  5. Interesting, Marvin!
    Reminds me of the cartoons where the coyote only fell when he noticed he was running on air. :)
    Hee hee at Ron/rocks remark.
    Good reminder about faith. Really comes from the heart, not just the mouth.
  7. There are times in our lives when its all or nothing. And being in a place where you have nothing to bring to the tablebut need to rely solely on HIM is a pretty good place to be. And I like that this girl arrived to the place in her life where this walk of faith became daily routine for her.
  8. Good parable, old silly. The LOA works miracles, but wow – what kind of faith would it take to BELIEVE you can walk on water! Reminds me of the story in the Bible where Jesus walked on water and told Peter to walk out to him. Peter was doing fine until he looked down and his faith wavered and he sank.
  9. It’s a parable that teaches a story of faith, commitment and trust.
  10. I like that one and I’m giggling at Ron’s comment.
    That kind of faith is so simplistic, yet amazing.
    Great faith indeed, so simple, and yet so difficult to really BELIEVE. What does Jesus say in the Bible? Faith the size of a mustard seed can move mountains. But it has to be REAL faith.
    Good post – thanks!
    Great parable with a strong, inspirational message. The LOA is a fact, but practicing it to one’s advantage takes incredible faith and belief.
